10 Gbps Internet Connection Speed Might Became A Reality Without Changing Your ISP

If a 1 Gbps internet connection lets you stream content & make video calls without interruption, imagine what a 10 Gbps internet connection could do for you. According to CableLabs, an innovation lab for cable industry, this could become a reality before we enter into the next decade.

The lines between work & house have been thinned during these years of pandemic and our Internet reliance has increased enormously. Even as mobile internet, it allows you to stay connected to WFH (work from home), it’s not a match when you want to stream 4K content or to play with friends around the world. A solid wired connection is what you are looking for if there is a important presentation to a client & a wireless connection may not actually work in the corners of one own abode.

CableLabs technology developers are already striving to deliver the next big thing on the Internet in the easiest way possible. Working with thousands of cable Internet service providers (ISP), CableLabs is well aware that, unlike mobile Internet, it is not possible to physically upgrade wired networks every time a major upgrade is required. That’s why it has updated how data transmission works to improve wired internet speeds & reliability.

With the DOCSIS 4.0 specification, it is able to use existing Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) to deliver ultra-high speeds. According to CableLabs, one of its member organizations, Comcast, delivered download and upload speeds of 4Gbps in a live test last year, while another member, Charter Communications, was able to reach speeds of up to 8.5 Gbps when downloading & 6 Gbps when uploading on an Hybrid Fiber Coax.

CableLabs has borrowed technologies like coherent optics that are typically used on long-haul, metro, & submarine networks and used them for tasks on existing fiber networks. When team with the multiplexing of the wavelength division (using different colors to send data to the same fiber optic cable), technology allows existing fiber resources to carry a much higher number of bits per sec. Using those specs, Comcast was able to achieve speeds of 10 Gbps in a test, CableLabs said in its press release.

For the demand for these ultra high speeds, CableLabs launched 10G challenge to develop applications on these networks.
