Last month, Chinese Rover Yutu 2 spotted a mysterious cube-shaped object as it passed through Von Kármán crater. The internet was immediately went willd with theories that the object called a “mysterious hut” or “strange cube” could be of alien or extraterrestrial origin.
The discovery was actually made for the first time in November during the 36th lunar day of the Yutu 2 rover’s mission. The sighted object was about 80 meters away on northern horizon. The discovery was reported on Yutu 2 diary entry Our Space, a Chinese-language blog associated with the China National Space Administration (CNSA).
The Space Agency of China then announced that it would travel to the direction of object at a super fast lunar speed of 656 feet per hour to-get some answers.
Now we have finally confirmed what the object is and it is not frankly so exciting. Its just a simple rock.
Paul Byrne, Professor in Earth & Planetary Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, told Inverse. “It’s clearly a big boulder the size of a small boulder. And so, by definition, it is a boulder.
“There is actually a definition of boulder, acc to something called the Udden-Wentworth scale, which says a boulder is a piece of rock with a diameter greater than 256mm. So I think our lunar friend counts.
In January 2020, Yutu2 released a treasure trove of images from never seen before far (or “dark”) side of the Moon. The images came from the Chang’e4 lander terrain camera & the panoramic camera of the Yutu 2 rover.
At that time, an impressive 17,239 files with a total data volume of 20.9 GB were published.
