Google’s entire web domain in Argentina was bought by a man for about Rs 200 last week and it was probably his luckiest day. Nicolas Kuroña, a resident of Buenos Aires, noticed that Google’s domain was down after he received texts from his friends on WhatsApp about Google being down.

Instead of ignoring the problem, Kuroña decided to dig deeper about Google’s outage and discovered that the domain name had expired. He discovered this by checking on the Argentinian domain name registry, NIC Argentina. He discovered that Google’s Domain ‘‘ was available to purchase for 270 pesos and he didn’t waste any time grabbing it.

“The domain expired, I was able to buy it legally,” he tweeted, and soon after other Argentine web users spotted his name as the owner of the domain. “I have the purchase invoice, so I’m calm,” he said.

“When the purchase process was completed and my data appeared, I knew that something was going to happen I was really anxious,” he told BBC later. “I could not believe what had just happened.”

“I want to make it clear that I never had any bad intentions,” he added. “I just tried to buy it and the NIC allowed me to.”

It seems like Kuroña did not profit from purchasing the domain as he only held it for a brief time. He transferred the domain back to Google shortly after he bought it and did not get a refund of the 270 peso fee.
