Life is full of surprises. You never know what goes your way. It may be another rejection of the dream job you applied for, or a job at an organization you never intended to work for. This is the story of David Miller, who has been involved in NASA for eight years on space walks & planned to operate a robotic operations on International Space Station, but has never been interviewed for the job.
It all happened months after Miller graduated from the University of Washington. As a mechanical engineer, Miller wanted to secure an entry-level position in Boeing to make wire-harness for magnificent 787s. He contacted the post recruiter for position and interviewed him for the post. The recruiter also informed him of his position at manipulator, graphics analysis, & Interactive Kinematics (MAGIK) team. Not knowing what MAGIK was doing, Miller asked for more details about the post in a personal interview.
NASA’s MAGIK team will determine the feasibility of robotic operations on the ISS and provide the necessary ground-work for it. Miller attended only one interview and was offered a job a few weeks later. He moved to Texas and on the day of orientation he noticed that he was hired by NASA while processing the paperwork.

The whole story is revealed thanks to a TikTok video shared by Miller’s girlfriend. This video has been watched over 9 million times so far and has been posted with a follow-up video.
Fortunately, Miller wasn’t a fish from NASA’s water. He worked on typical space work done by engineers in university, such as building a student version of a satellite & experimenting with 0 gravity. By doing so, he was able to fit his job perfectly and contribute to the work underway at the ISS. He was also part of some spacewalk and dock mission control, Miller told Buzzfeed.

But how did Miller get to NASA? There is a theory.
The MAGIK team seemed to have very few people at the time & reached out to NASA’s long-term contractor Boeing for help. NASA & Boeing recruiters probably turned to the same pool of applicants, and Miller arrived at NASA. However, this was no exception. He had a colleague who was similarly appointed just a week before his experience.
