The Los Angeles branch of Planned Parenthood has been affected by a data breach involving approximately 400,000 patients, but there is no indication that the information was used “for fraudulent purposes,” the group said.
A hacker installed computer malware between October 9 & 17 and “exfiltrated” files containing patient names & possibly addresses, insurance & medical information, including any procedures they allegedly had may have suffered, Planned Parenthood Los Angeles warned Tuesday.
“Patients are encouraged to review statements from their healthcare providers or health insurers & to contact them immediately if they see charges for services they did not receive,” the industry said. in a press release.
The attack involved the ransomware, the software that computer hackers can use to block an organization from its own computer network until to pay for redemption, but the group did not immediately declared if a ransom was paid.
Breach is under investigation, the organization said.
The announcement came a day before the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments that could impact overturning the nationwide right to abortion is over-tuned. The 1973 court decision Roe v. Wade legalized abortion across the United States, & its 1992 decision in Planned Parenthood v. Casey reaffirmed Roe.
Planned Parenthood has before been hacked before. The Metropolitan Washington branch revealed this year that patient & donor information was hacked in 2020, and in 2015, hackers posted the names & other information of hundreds of Planned Parenthood employees online.
