While it would be great if teachers could spend a lot of time with each of their students, the fact is that children often end up doing most of their writing exercises without supervision. A new system can help solve this problem using a “smart” pen.
The technology has been developed via the German French “Kaligo based Intelligent Hand Writing Teacher” project incorporates a special version of existing Kaligo application, in which students currently use a stylus to write letters of alphabet on tablet screen.
According to scientists at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, however, such a setup is not ideal for teaching children how to write on paper with an ink pen, which they will likely end up doing in real world. With this in mind, KIHT instead uses a refillable ink pen equipped with an IMU (inertial measurement unit) & Bluetooth module.
Guided by Kaligo’s handwriting exercises performed on a tablet, students will use pen to write individual letters on a sheet of plain paper. In doing so, the IMU will track position of the pen tip, transmitting data back to the app. The app will in turn determine if letter is written correctly & will warn the child if he does it wrong.

Teachers can always check the student’s work on the sheet of paper when given the opportunity. Student data stored on the app can also be reviewed after completing the exercises.
The Karlsruhe Institute & German pen manufacturer Stabilo are developing the hardware end of KIHT system, while L’IRISA (Institut de Researche en Informatique et Systems Aleatoires) & Learn & Go (creator of Kaligo application) are working on the software.
