In 6G Cognitive Information Theory: A Mailbox Perspective, published by MDPI in Big Data & Cognitive Computing on October 16, 2021, NIST & international researchers propose a “cognitive” 6G network, significantly improvement of the 5G network, which encodes & transmits data with its meaning or semantics.
With the rapid commercial deployment of 5G, researchers have started to look at 6G. Its key technologies for mobile communications networks are expected to be available as early as 2023, with 6G networks emerging by 2030, according to Saad et al. Compared to 5G, The 6G network will increase data speeds by more than 100 times to 1 terabyte per second or more, and enable the inclusion of edge intelligent-devices & computing. In order to move large amounts of data to where & when they are needed, 6G networks have to customise services to meet requirements, transfer valuable data & interact with users.
To meet these requirements, paper offers a “mailbox theory” which envisions a 6G network characterized as:
- Distributed intelligent network: This would have smart apps embedded throughout the network & would be smart, managed & controlled. The network would be able to transmit, store, analyze of large scale data & provide personalized access at anytime & anywhere.
- Proactive interactive network: It would be a personalized, demand-cenntered network. Users would define network functions for on-demand resource planning. In addition, the network would adjust in real time according to the evolution of user demand. Such a design requires AI to regulate the network and the protection of personal data.
- Cognitive information transmission: Compared to traditional communications, 6G network would significantly reduce redundant transmissions & better guarantee the semantic meanings are mined, extracted & sent.
