After the huge success of the world’s first USB-C equipped iPhone, an engineer has just made the world’s first Android phone with a Lightning port, Engadget reported.
Last year, Ken Pillonel’s fought the odds and spent many hours understanding the architecture of the iPhone to create the much-needed iPhone with a USB-C port. There is no indication that the reverse engineered project is also Pillonel’s brainchild and although it is unlikely to make the same waves as his previous project, Pillonel wanted to do it just for fun.
As Pillonel said in the teaser video, one of the other goals of this project was to balance things out a bit. The engineer believes the attention his last device received left the world into chaos and this project would help draw attention to Android devices too.
Apple continues to challenge
Speaking to Engadget, Pillonel said the Android phone project at technical level is quite challenging. His goal of making the Lightning port functional not only for charging the device but also for data transfer added a layer of complexity to the project.
Overall, getting everything to work was another problem. Apparently, the Lightning charging cables Apple sells don’t charge every Lightning port they encounter. Instead, they confirm that the device being charged is an Apple device, which is why the project required it the cable into believing that his modified android device was indeed an apple device.
Modifications are always difficult because they also have to be fit right-back into a commercial-grade phone with little chance of error. However, Pillonel is improving every day with these mods and hasn’t been fussy about the quality of the Android phone’s finish, as he has no intention of selling it online.
What’s next?
Coming soon on the Pillow’s YouTube channel is the long video of how he managed to make the first Android phone in the world with a lightning port.
After that done, YouTubers have thrown him challenges like replacing the 3.5mm jack on the phone with an additional USB Type C port, or even bringing a micro USB, Lightning, and USB-C port together in one phone, even at the expense of the speaker (some have real charger problem).
What we do know from the comments is that an AirPods related project is in the works and will be released soon as well.
We’ll keep an eye on that.
